Latitudes. Encounters with the Philippines: Dexter Fernandez, Jaime Pacena, Ronald Caringal, Ronald Caringal, Nikki Luna, Ronald Caringal, Yasmin Sison, Maria Taniguchi, Nona Garcia, Annie Cabigting, Wire Tuazon

Following the success of the shows “South-East B(l)ooming” and “Pleasures of Caos”, focused on contemporary art from South-East Asia, Primo Marella Gallery further develops the research and understanding of this area with the exhibition “Latitudes. Encounters with the Philippines”.

 

Thanks to the precious collaboration of Evitas Sarenas and Miguel Rosales, the show will feature installations, paintings and drawings by nine of the most important and recognized artists coming from Philippines.

NONA GARCIA (1978, Quezon, PH) – One of the most significant artists from the Philippines. Appreciated by the public and critics, she participated to important shows and events including: Prague Biennial 2009 (Czech Republic), Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial 2005 (Japan), “13 Artists Award 2003” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (Philippines), “Utopia” for The Box 2002 (Singapore) and“Philip Morris Asian Art Awards” at the Singapore Art Museum (Singapore).

ANNIE CABIGTING (1971, PH) – Since the graduation in Fine Art at the University of the Philippines, the artist has adopted a conceptual language. Her paintings are conceived starting from her photographs and investigate reality with a detachment typical of the documentary, encouraging a different way to look at the artwork. Among the main shows to which she participated we recall: Prague Biennal 2009 (Czech Republic), the exhibition “Girls will not be girls” at the Art Center, SM Megamall Mandaluyong City (Philippines) in 2006, and “The Sedimentation of the mind” at the Vargas Museum Quazon City (Philippines) in 2004.

YASMIN SISON (1973) – Winner of the prize“13 Artists Award” in 2006 for the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP), the artist started her career in Manila in the Nineties, becoming a key figure in the international art scene. Among the main exhibitions we recall: Prague Biennal 2009 (Czech Republic), “The Sedimentation of the mind” at the Vargas Museum Quazon City (Philippines) in 2004, “Densities, Making Sense of dense cities” at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines in 2003 and the solo show “Kitchen Sink Drama” for The British Coulnil Library in 2000.

 

WIRE TUAZON (1973, Angono, PH) - Key figure in the Philippine contemporary art scene and founder of artistic movements such asSurrounded by Water and the collective Neo-Angon. Wire Tuazon has exhibited in the main venues of the Philippines. Among the main solo shows we recall: “Parables and Paradoxes,” Finale Art File, for the LaO Centre, Makati City (Philippines) in 2008, “Reality Sandwiches” at the Art Centre, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City (Philippines) in 2007 and “Matter and Memory”, for Ufo, Metro Manila (Philippines) in 2004.

 

NIKKI LUNA (1977, PH) – After graduating in 2006 in Fine Art and painting at the University of the Philippines, the artist has been selected in 2008 for a summer residency at the Cooper Union, a very important and prestigious institution in New York. Since then she took part to a lot of shows including: “Seven Jeans for Seven Artists” at the Greenbelt 5 Mall, Makati City in 2009 and “Luwalhati:  Anniversary Group Show” for the Art Informal Space Greenhills, San Juan in 2008.

MARIA TANIGUCHI (1981, PH) – Born in the Philippines, the artist lives today between Manila and London, where in 2009 she completed a Master in Art Practice at the Goldsmiths College. In the last year she participated to a number of international shows and events, among which we recall: HBC Berlin (September 2010), “No Soul for Sale” Festival at the Tate Modern in London, the 2010 edition of Next Wave Festival in Melbourne and the show “Homestay” at the Osage Centre in Shanghai.

DEXTER FERNANDEZ () - Born inCaloocan City the artist now lives in Manila. Among the shows he participated to we recall: “Magnum Asupre 2” at the Bluewings Art Space Rafa’s deli & café in Quezon City, Tutok Bantayog in 2009 and “TULAY: A Filipino & Fil-Am Art Exibit” for the lo  I- Hotel Manilatown Center in San Francisco (U.S.A.) in 2008.

JAIME PACENA (1980, PH) – Creative director of MixMedia and influential figure of the College of Fine Arts and Design of Santo Tomas, the artist is recognized in the Philippines for his continuous experimentations through which he combines art and technology. In 2007 he had a solo show for the Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino, Cultural Center of the Philippinescalled “Parallel Wounds” and in 2005 he won the second prize for the mixed media section with the work titled “Watch Me” during the 58th Art Association of the Philippines  (AAP) Annual Competition.

RONALD CARINGAL (1980, PH) – Founder of the Cubicle Art Space, an institution that since 2002 promotes and sustains young artists in the city of Maybunga, the artist participated to a series of important exhibitions including: “Commitment reissues” (Solo exhibition) at the Utterly Art, South Bridge Road, Singapore in 2008, “BOXED 2” at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines, in 2007, “Quit Playing Games with my Art” for the Alliance Francais de Manille in 2005 and “Everyday Fools” at UFO, Metro Manila in 2004.
