Alleys of a City Named Jogya

Primo Marella Gallery is pleased to present to the European public “The Alleys of a City Named Jogya”, a large collective exhibition dedicated to Indonesian Street Art.

The works presented by the artists, selected with the help of the curator Jim Supangkat, exemplify the most recent developments of this artistic trend, which developed in Indonesia in the early 1990s and has steadily grown ever since.

Despite their young age, all the artists present in the exhibition have already participated in several mural projects in the region, especially in the heart of Jogya, the city where this attention to popular culture by local artists first established itself and characterized by narrow and labyrinthine alleys.

Speaking about them, the curator Megan Wilson states "(...) They have a strong social conscience, combined with humor, a bold aesthetic characterized by a strong and serious commitment to their craft but often present their projects in a context that guarantees a ephemeral experience. (...) "

The intent of the exhibition is to bring to Europe a selection of three-dimensional paintings and works, which clearly and effectively combine elements taken from Indonesian popular culture and references to the world of comics and music that have greatly influenced the young artists of this generation.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Primo Marella Gallery publishes the catalog "The Alleys of a City Named Jogya" with critical texts by Jim Supangkat. The book is a key element to understand the most recent influences and developments of Indonesian Street Art.
