Gede Mahendra Yasa - Painting for Painting’s Sake

Primo Marella Gallery is pleased to present the first European solo exhibition by the Indonesian artist Gede Mahendra Yasa (1967, Singaraja, Indonesia).

 

“Painting for Painting’s Sake” is the project the artist is showing in this exhibition. Through that project he reflects and analizes the West art history thanks to paintings that took inspiration from the painting masters of the contemporary and modern art. Gede Mahendra Yasa gives to the public a his interpretation of the pluralism offered by the contemporary art. He investigates the various possibilities of painting: the medium that since the Renaissance has been considered the “high art”.

 

From Gerard Richter to Chris Ofili, from Jackson Pollock to Jasper Jhons sino and than René Magritte and Vincent van Gogh; the artist experiments himself and confronts himself with the bigger masters of the 20th-century art.

 

Concerning that, the curator of the exhibition Asmudjo Jono says “… What he does is to trace the history of painting and to find various new possibilities when making subject matters out of the theories, concepts, and history of painting. This approach has yielded a variety of paintings – as witnessed in this exhibition - that can only be achieved through a contemporary art framework. Therefore, this is the evidence showing that ultimately, hendra is indeed a contemporary painter.”
