Biography

“Self-awareness is a key feature of Liu Ding’s work — in many cases incessantly so. When you look at Liu Ding’s work, it is as if it is winking back at you, slyly implicating you in its investigations.”

Edward Sanderson

Born in 1976 in Changzhou, the Chinese Jiangsu Province. In 2001 he moved to the South of China to establish Pink Studio in Nanjing, where he continued his artistic practice. Among his achievements there is the foundation of Complete Art Experience Project (2004-2005) and his designation as the artistic director of Beijing’s JoyArt. He currently lives and works in Beijing as an independent artist. His main exhibitions count both solo and group shows in China and Europe, especially Italy, Germany, UK, The Netherlands, Norway as well as Russia and Australia.

Liu Ding pursues a research-based practice that manifests in a range of media, from painting to theatre production, as well as curatorial and theoretical work. Liu Ding’s works investigate the various mechanisms and rules of the art system. Through contrasts and comparisons between past and present archetypes, Liu Ding examines shifting ideas of the model citizen, the role of artists and intellectuals in society, and conditions of cultural production and historical knowledge.
